Health is a practice at home, treated as a condition in hospitals, considered a commodity in old age, and taught as a subject in schools. My conversation with Imah, my eight-year-old niece, prompted me to explore children's understanding of health. I began this inquiry using my preferred method: fieldwork.
Methodology:
In the Idukki district of Kerala, I conducted fieldwork at an ICDS Anganwadi centre, two public schools, and two private schools. I engaged with 190 students aged 4–12 to understand their perceptions of health. This was complemented by structured interviews with teachers, parents, and pediatric healthcare professionals, followed by secondary research on the intersection of health and education.
